2011 Runoffs
I recently took a racing trip with my Dad to Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. It’s about an hour north of Milawuakee and sits on a beautiful 650 acre plot of land. The track itself is four miles long and is all about horsepower and high-speeds. A great place to have a race.
I wanted to chronicle more of the journey from “home base” at our shop in Santa Barbara, CA, to the track, and the action itself. Unfortunately, our primary help had to bail and I had to step up, dramatically sacrificing my shooting time. As such, the 645 stayed at home and only the Leica M6 and 50mm Summicron came. Armed with Ilford Delta 100, XP2, and Kodak Ektar I managed to get a few snaps.
It’s always a great time headed out there and hanging our with the Toyota Racing family. A great group of people to go racing with. We ended up placing the car in 3rd after a 13-lap “sprint” race and were the only Toyota to cross the line.
Can’t wait for next year…
josh and kate
A beautiful and small wedding in Northern California shot entirely on film. Congrats, Josh and Kate!
mollusk surf shop
I have to say, this is one rad surf shop. It seems most surfing-centric retail stores lately cater to the über trendy with big names and whatnot. Not Mollusk. These guys know what’s up and their shop is a reflection for their love of surfing. Sure, they have the names everyone is familiar wtth but they also have items that are off the beaten path that are, quite frankly, much nicer and more unique.
Guys, keep it up.
And to those who have not yet gone - go. Now. You can also go to Trouble Coffee and The General Store which are both one block away on Judah.
the general store
Probably one of the best-kept secrets in San Francisco lies in the Outer Sunset district. Perhaps you should google the title of this post and pay a visit. You will not be disappointed.
the fourth of july
Though it’s been a few weeks since we celebrated our nation’s “birthday,” I am just now getting to these images to post to the blog.
It was a quaint 4th with just a handful of good friends, new and old. For Emily and Oli, it was their first time in SF since being children. They’re grown New Yorkers now but SF still managed to show them a side they didn’t know.
As an aside, and with nothing to do with this post, I received three orders back from my lab this round and had a sense of clarity about my photography that I’ve never had before. While I’m still getting down all the nuances of shooting nothing but film (correct, these are film photographs) I feel so much better, more empowered, and more creative when I get my scans back. Not to mention there is literally little to no work needed required prior to posting. I’ll have a dedicated blog post about my thoughts soon.
Lastly, props to Carlo Silvio (@cowboycoffee) for the shot of Jen and myself. It’s the fifth one down. Carlo, for those who must know, is immediately below said aforementioned shot.
katie and dan
Katie and Dan got married recently and asked if I would be up for shooting it. I had to say yes, they let me shoot their special day on film! All of it.
Congrats, guys. An amazing day!!

I was invited down to Mr. Thomas Johnson’s house a few weeks back to shoot around his property. Each day Thomas will send out his “Garden Shot of the Day” email with an artful photo of anything from his garden. He’s quite the accomplished photographer so I didn’t hesitate to pack a couple rolls of Portra 160, 400, and TMax in 120 and 220 variants.
It was an early Sunday morning but a fantastic opportunity to focus on the details. Enjoy.
a roll of portra
Shot some time ago. I had an extra roll of portra 400 120 on me. So I shot it while I walked home.
sunday morning
Gotta have that cup of joe to get juiced up. Today also happens to be a gorgeous day in The City.
norcal coast and camping
Finally went camping in Big Sur a couple weeks back with some friends. What’s not shown here is that Rebuck and I went to Laguna Seca earlier in the day to watch Ferrari’s. It was amazing. And so was the subsequent drive down the coast. A great weekend.
